How it works

Three waste factors, one score.

CTR gap. Your click-through rate is compared to the industry median. Below-benchmark CTR signals that ads are being shown to users who are unlikely to click, which typically means keyword intent is too broad, ad copy is not resonating, or match types are pulling low-quality queries. This factor accounts for up to 30 percent of the estimated waste.

Conversion rate gap. Your CVR is compared to the industry median. If clicks are not converting at the benchmark rate, budget is being spent on traffic that does not reach the goal. Landing page friction, offer clarity, and audience mismatch are the three most common causes. This factor accounts for up to 40 percent of the estimated waste.

CPC premium. If your average CPC is above the industry median, you are paying more per click than accounts with comparable performance. High CPC is not inherently bad if CVR is strong, but when both CPC and CVR are off benchmark simultaneously, the account is paying a double penalty. This factor accounts for up to 20 percent of the estimated waste.

Health score is derived from the combined waste as a percentage of total spend. A score of 80 to 95 is healthy. Below 60 usually means more than 20 percent of budget is underperforming versus benchmark.

Worked example

A lead gen account at $12,000 per month.

B2B lead gen campaign, 30-day period
Spend $12,000 per month · CTR 0.38% · CVR 1.80% · CPC $4.90

The lead gen benchmark is CTR 0.78%, CVR 3.75%, CPC $2.93. This account is 51 percent below CTR benchmark, 52 percent below CVR benchmark, and 40 percent above CPC benchmark.

CTR waste: 0.51 deficit times 0.30 times $12,000 equals $1,836. CVR waste: 0.52 times 0.40 times $12,000 equals $2,496. CPC premium waste: 0.40 times 0.20 times $12,000 equals $960. Total estimated waste of $5,292 per month, range $3,704 to $6,880.

Verdict. Health score of 12 out of 100. The account is spending at roughly 3.5x the market CPC while converting at less than half the benchmark rate. The primary diagnosis is keyword intent mismatch pulling low-quality queries on broad match terms, compounded by a landing page that is not converting the clicks that do arrive. The next step is the full account audit to surface the exact search terms and keywords driving the gap.

Frequently asked

Wasted spend questions, answered.

How accurate is this estimate?

This estimator uses your aggregate inputs against industry benchmark medians. It produces a directional range, not an exact figure. The actual wasted spend in your account depends on specific keywords, search terms, placements, and audience segments that only an account-level audit can surface. Use this tool to size the problem in 10 seconds. The Google Ads audit at paidsync.ai/audit provides a more detailed account-level view, or connect your account to PaidSync to ask Claude or ChatGPT for keyword-level waste analysis directly.

What counts as wasted ad spend?

Wasted spend is budget allocated to clicks or impressions that are statistically unlikely to convert at a positive return. The three main categories are low-intent search terms triggered by broad or phrase match keywords, high-CPC placements with conversion rates far below break-even, and audience segments whose CTR and CVR are materially below the account average.

Negative keywords, placement exclusions, and audience bid adjustments are the three levers that directly address all three categories.

What is a healthy health score?

A score of 80 to 95 indicates your metrics are within or above the industry benchmark range. Most actively managed accounts in this range are still leaving 5 to 15 percent of budget on the table. A score of 60 to 79 is moderate and suggests one or two clear optimization opportunities. Below 60 typically means more than 20 percent of budget is underperforming versus benchmark and a full audit should be prioritized.

How do I find wasted spend in Google Ads?

Four places to look. First, the Search Terms report. Filter to the last 30 days and sort by cost. Any search term with more than two or three clicks and zero conversions is a negative keyword candidate. Second, the Placements report in Display campaigns. Sort by cost, look for high-spend placements with zero conversions. Third, the Audience segments tab. Sort by cost-per-conversion, look for segments three times your target CPA. Fourth, the Keywords Quality Score column. Keywords with QS of 4 or below are paying a bid premium. Improving the ad or landing page for those keywords reduces both CPC and wasted spend simultaneously.

How is this different from a full audit?

This estimator uses five aggregate inputs to produce a benchmark-based estimate. A full account audit reads every keyword, search term, ad group, placement, audience segment, and conversion path at the account level. The audit returns exact waste amounts, specific keywords to pause or restrict, and negative keyword candidates your actual campaigns have generated. The Google Ads audit at paidsync.ai/audit is the account-level review tool. Connecting your account to PaidSync also lets you ask Claude or ChatGPT for keyword-level waste analysis across all platforms.

What are the industry CTR and CVR benchmarks used?

The benchmarks are Google Ads cross-account medians as of 2026: eCommerce CTR 0.86%, CVR 1.33%, CPC $1.16. SaaS/B2B CTR 0.52%, CVR 2.23%, CPC $3.80. Lead Gen CTR 0.78%, CVR 3.75%, CPC $2.93. Finance CTR 0.56%, CVR 5.10%, CPC $4.01. Healthcare CTR 0.59%, CVR 2.57%, CPC $2.62. Travel CTR 0.85%, CVR 2.82%, CPC $1.08. Retail CTR 1.01%, CVR 2.87%, CPC $0.70. These benchmarks are averages across many account types and should be used directionally rather than as hard targets.
