By Ahmed Ashraf|Updated October 24, 2026
Google Tag Manager Claude

PaidSync connects Google Tag Manager to Claude via MCP. Claude gets 39 tools to audit your containers and to build, preview and publish tags, triggers and variables. Ask plain-English questions. Get real GTM data back.

Setup time: 2 minutes. Free plan available. No credit card required.

How to connect Google Tag Manager to Claude with PaidSync

This is the route through Claude's connector directory. No API key is needed, because Claude connects with a PaidSync sign-in (OAuth).

Before you start

  • Any Claude plan works, including Free, and there is nothing to install.
  • Signing in with Google? There is no separate sign-up. You pick Continue with Google in step 2, and your free PaidSync account (15 tasks a month, no credit card) is created when you press Approve.
  • Prefer an email and password? Create the account at paidsync.ai/signup first. The sign-up link inside the sign-in window opens the website and does not bring you back to Claude.
  • Know which Google login can open your Tag Manager container. Read access is enough to audit it, and building or publishing needs edit and publish rights on the container. You use it in step 3.
  • On a Team or Enterprise plan, an Owner first adds PaidSync for the organization under Organization settings, then Connectors. Each person then connects with their own PaidSync login.
1

Add PaidSync to Claude from the connector directory

Open PaidSync in the Claude connector directory and click Connect. Or, in claude.ai or the Claude Desktop app, open Customize, then Connectors, click + next to Connectors, search PaidSync, and click Connect.

Sign in with your PaidSync login. That OAuth sign-in is what lets Claude apply changes. Connectors work on every Claude plan, including Free.

Using Claude Code instead? Run claude mcp add --transport http paidsync https://mcp.paidsync.ai/mcp, then type /mcp inside a session to sign in.

On a client with no directory, add PaidSync as a custom connector with the server URL instead (on a Team or Enterprise plan, only an Owner can add one):

https://mcp.paidsync.ai/mcp

Save it, then sign in with your PaidSync login when Claude asks.

2

Sign in to PaidSync and press Approve

The PaidSync sign-in screen opens. Pick Continue with Google, or sign in with your PaidSync email and password. A PaidSync screen then asks whether to allow Claude to manage your ad accounts via PaidSync. Press Approve and Claude shows PaidSync as connected.

New to PaidSync and signing in with Google? Your free account (15 tasks a month, no credit card) is created when you press Approve. The screen also mentions ad accounts already connected inside PaidSync. On a new account that list is empty until you finish step 3.

3

Connect your Tag Manager container and ask Claude

In any chat, ask: "Connect my Google Tag Manager." Claude replies with a link that opens Google's own sign-in and consent screen. Sign in with the Google account that has access to your containers and approve access. GTM uses a separate OAuth client from Google Ads, so your Google Ads connection is unaffected. PaidSync never sees your Google password.

Come back and ask: "List my GTM containers." Claude uses list_gtm_accounts and list_gtm_containers to show what your Google login can open, and you tell it which container to use. Connecting and listing containers uses none of your tasks. Then try: "Audit my GTM container and list anything broken." You can also connect Google Tag Manager from the PaidSync dashboard instead. Both routes use the same PaidSync login, so Claude sees the container either way.

Free plan includes 15 tasks per month. Pro plans from $99/month.

What Claude Can Do with Google Tag Manager

  • Audit a container. Claude lists tags with no trigger, unused triggers, a missing conversion linker or GA4 configuration tag, and paused tags.
  • Read what is set up. Claude lists accounts, containers, workspaces, tags, triggers, variables, environments and versions, and shows which version is live.
  • Build in a workspace. Claude creates a workspace and adds tags, triggers and variables in it, for example a GA4 event tag on a form submission trigger.
  • Preview before anything goes live. Claude gives you a preview link for the workspace so you can test it on your site first.
  • Version and publish. Claude creates a version from the workspace and publishes it once you confirm.

Claude can read the whole container and also change it: workspaces, tags, triggers, variables, built-in variables, versions and publishing. Claude's own confirmation prompt is the human check before a change runs, and publishing makes a version live on your website at once. GTM tools do not edit your website code, so the container snippet from get_gtm_container_snippet still has to be on your pages.

Google Tag Manager prompts to try in Claude

Each prompt runs on the PaidSync tools named after it and uses one or more of your tasks. Prompts 4, 5 and 7 make a change in your container.

  1. "Check my Tag Manager setup. Is it connected and what containers do I have?" Runs setup_gtm, which checks the whole setup in one call: connected, accounts, containers and tags.
  2. "Audit the container and list tags with no trigger." Runs audit_gtm_container, which returns what it finds without changing anything.
  3. "What is live in the container right now, and what changes are pending in this workspace?" Runs get_gtm_version_live and get_gtm_workspace_status.
  4. "Create a workspace called claude-fixes." Runs create_gtm_workspace. The change applies on the first call, so check it before you confirm.
  5. "Add a GA4 event tag for form_submit on a form submission trigger." Runs create_gtm_trigger and create_gtm_tag. create_gtm_tag previews with dry_run before it writes.
  6. "Give me a preview link so I can test the workspace." Runs preview_gtm_workspace, which changes nothing on your live site.
  7. "Create a version from the workspace and publish it." Runs create_gtm_version and publish_gtm_version. Publishing needs confirm and goes live for real users at once, so test with the preview first.

Why use PaidSync for Google Tag Manager in Claude

Audit, build and publish in one place. PaidSync has 39 GTM tools. 18 only read and 19 can write, so Claude can audit a container, build the fix in a workspace, preview it and publish it in one conversation.

Cross-platform reasoning. The same PaidSync connection covers Google Ads, Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok, Snapchat, Reddit, Pinterest, Microsoft Ads, GA4 and Merchant Center. Claude can find the tag that fires a conversion, check the result in GA4, compare it with Google Ads and propose a fix in one thread.

How do I connect Google Tag Manager to Claude Code?

Claude Code connects to the same PaidSync server with one command:

claude mcp add --transport http paidsync https://mcp.paidsync.ai/mcp

Start a session, type /mcp, pick paidsync, and sign in with your PaidSync login in the browser window that opens. Claude Code stores the OAuth token for you. No key is pasted anywhere. The GA4 to Claude Code guide goes further, and the Claude Code setup page covers the shared .mcp.json for teams and a headless audit run.

Troubleshooting Google Tag Manager in Claude

  • The sign-in fails. Sign in to PaidSync the way you signed up, with Continue with Google or with your PaidSync email and password. Email users without an account create one at paidsync.ai/signup first, then click Connect in Claude again. If Google's own consent screen fails, ask Claude "Connect my Google Tag Manager" again for a fresh link.
  • Claude used the wrong container. Tell Claude which container and workspace you mean by name. Not sure what you have? Ask Claude to list them with list_gtm_accounts, list_gtm_containers and list_gtm_workspaces, which use none of your tasks.
  • A container is not listed. PaidSync lists the containers your connected Google login can open. In Tag Manager, an admin adds that login under the account or container user management. Connected with the wrong Google login? Disconnect it in the PaidSync dashboard and connect again with the login that has access.
  • Claude says it has no GTM tool. PaidSync shows Claude a short starter list of tools to keep the chat light. Ask Claude to call paidsync_context first. It returns your connected platforms and the full tool list, Tag Manager included, and Claude then runs those tools through paidsync_exec. If PaidSync is missing from Claude altogether, check that it shows as connected under Customize, then Connectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect Google Tag Manager to Claude?

Open PaidSync in Claude's connector directory and click Connect, or in Claude open Customize, then Connectors, search PaidSync and click Connect. Sign in to PaidSync and press Approve, then ask Claude to connect Google Tag Manager and list your containers. No API key is needed. Full steps are above.

What can Claude do in Google Tag Manager?

Claude can audit a container, list its tags, triggers, variables and versions, and check what is live. It can also create workspaces, tags, triggers and variables, give you a preview link, and create and publish a version, with your confirmation.

Can Claude publish my GTM container?

Yes, with two checks. publish_gtm_version needs confirm set, and Claude asks before it runs the tool. Build changes in a separate workspace and test them with a preview link first, because publishing makes a version live on your website at once.

Does connecting GTM affect my Google Ads connection?

No. GTM uses a separate OAuth client from Google Ads, so connecting GTM leaves your Google Ads connection as it is.

Does PaidSync work with multiple GTM containers?

Yes. list_gtm_accounts, list_gtm_containers and list_gtm_workspaces show everything your Google login can open. Tell Claude which container and workspace you mean by name.

Is PaidSync free to use with Google Tag Manager?

Yes. The free plan gives 15 tasks per month at $0 with no credit card. Pro starts at $99 a month and Team at $249 a month.

Do I need Claude Pro for this?

No. Connectors work on every Claude plan, including Free, in both the Claude Desktop app and claude.ai. Claude Code connects with one terminal command and the same PaidSync login. PaidSync has its own pricing, free for 15 tasks a month with no credit card.

Is Google Tag Manager access read-only through PaidSync?

No. Of the 39 GTM tools, 18 only read and 19 can write. Most GTM writes have no dry run and apply on the first call, so keep Claude's approval prompt on for them. Deletes need confirm_destructive.

Does this work with ChatGPT and Perplexity too?

Yes. The same PaidSync connection works in Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Cursor, Windsurf and Claude Code. Connect Google Tag Manager to PaidSync once and use it from any of them.
