Why Your Google Ads CTR Dropped

Troubleshooting guide
Author: Ahmed Ashraf|6 min read|Updated September 23, 2026

When Google Ads CTR drops, check whether your ads changed before assuming searchers did: a new ad and an auto-applied recommendation both show up in Change history. The ranked causes are new copy performing worse than the old, recommendations applied automatically, bid or budget limits that cost auction volume, too few headlines and descriptions to test, and competitor ads that got sharper.

The four questions and five causes below are the same playbook the free campaign troubleshooter runs. Here each cause also names the PaidSync tool that checks it in your own account and the change you can preview before anything is applied.

Answer four questions first

Answer yes or no to each. Every cause below says which answer points to it.

  1. Did you change ad copy in the last 14 days?
  2. Did Google approve new ad variants that you did not author?
  3. Has impression share dropped while clicks dropped?
  4. Are you running Responsive Search Ads with 15 headlines and 4 descriptions?

The likely causes, ranked

1. New ad copy underperforming the old

Points here when you answer Yes to question 1.

Pause the new ad, re-enable the old one and watch whether CTR recovers over the following week. Then test new copy one headline at a time, or as an ad variation experiment, instead of replacing the whole ad.

Check it with PaidSync

get_ad_performance, get_change_history

Ask your assistant: “Compare CTR for each ad in this campaign for the 14 days before and after the last ad change.”

Preview the fix

pause_ad and enable_ad default to dry_run, so you see which ad would be paused and which switched back on. The live pause also needs confirm_destructive.

2. Google auto-applied recommendations changed your ad

Points here when you answer Yes to question 2.

Open Recommendations, Auto-apply, and turn off the ad and asset types you did not choose. Then check Change history for changes made by recommendations and revert the ones you did not want.

Check it with PaidSync

get_change_history, list_recommendations

Ask your assistant: “Show changes made by Google recommendations in the last 30 days, and list the recommendations still open.”

Preview the fix

Auto-apply is switched off in Google Ads under Recommendations, Auto-apply; PaidSync has no tool that turns it off. In the PaidSync workspace, apply_recommendation and subscribe_to_recommendations never run automatically.

3. Bid or budget cap losing auction volume

Points here when you answer Yes to question 3.

Check Search lost impression share for the campaign. If lost to rank is rising, your ad rank is slipping: improve ad relevance and landing pages, or raise bids on the terms that convert. If lost to budget is rising, the budget runs out before the day ends. When CTR and impression share fall together, look at bids and budget before rewriting ads.

Check it with PaidSync

get_impression_share_analysis, get_auction_insights, get_budget_pacing

Ask your assistant: “For this campaign, show Search lost impression share to rank and to budget for the last 30 days against the 30 days before.”

Preview the fix

update_campaign_budget defaults to dry_run and returns the new daily budget before it is applied. Budget updates also need confirm_destructive, and a change of more than 50 percent needs confirm_large_change.

4. Too few headlines and descriptions to test

Points here when you answer No to question 4.

A Responsive Search Ad takes up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions. Google says Ad Strength is feedback on asset variety and is not used to calculate Ad Rank or Quality Score, so the reason to fill the slots is more combinations to match each search. Add distinct headlines until Ad Strength reads Good or Excellent.

Check it with PaidSync

list_ads, get_ad_performance, run_account_audit

Ask your assistant: “Which responsive search ads have fewer than 15 headlines or 4 descriptions, and what is their Ad Strength?”

Preview the fix

create_responsive_search_ad defaults to dry_run, and a live call creates the ad paused unless you ask for it enabled, so it can be reviewed before it serves.

5. Competitor ad copy improved

Points here when the causes above are ruled out, with answers No to question 1, No to question 2, No to question 3, Yes to question 4.

Search your top keywords yourself and read the competing ads. If their offers are sharper than yours, make your headlines more specific, with a price, a deadline or a guarantee. Auction insights shows whether a new domain started showing above you.

Check it with PaidSync

get_auction_insights, get_ad_performance

Ask your assistant: “Which domains showed above my ads more often this month than last month, and how did my CTR move on the same campaigns?”

Preview the fix

create_responsive_search_ad defaults to dry_run and returns the new ad with its headlines before anything is created.

How PaidSync previews a fix before it runs

In the PaidSync workspace, by default, every write is approval-gated: it is held as a card before it runs, and an applied card gets a one-tap undo. On every path, Google Ads creates and most other creates are previewed with dry_run, destructive operations need confirm_destructive, and applied changes are logged, on a best-effort basis, with a 7-day before-and-after outcome. When your own assistant calls PaidSync over MCP, no card is written, so whether a person confirms first is set in your assistant.

The full model, including what is not built yet, is on the security page.

Run this check in Claude, Claude Code, Cursor or ChatGPT. Connect Google Ads once, then paste any of the questions above to your assistant.

Start with a free audit

Not sure which symptom fits? The free Google Ads audit tool scores wasted spend, structure, Quality Score and Performance Max, and the campaign troubleshooter runs its playbooks without an account.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my Google Ads CTR suddenly drop?

Look for a change on your side first. A new ad and a recommendation Google applied automatically both appear in Change history. If nothing changed, check lost impression share, because falling impression share and falling CTR together point to bids or budget rather than copy.

Does Ad Strength affect Ad Rank?

No. Google says Ad Strength is feedback on asset variety and combination testing and is not used to calculate Ad Rank, Quality Score or auction wins. Filling the 15 headline and 4 description slots gives Google more combinations to match to each search.

How do I stop Google from changing my ads automatically?

Open Recommendations, then Auto-apply, and turn off the ad and asset recommendation types you did not choose. Check Change history for changes already made by recommendations and revert the ones you did not want.

What is Search lost impression share?

Search lost impression share (rank) is the share of eligible impressions your ads missed on the Search Network because of Ad Rank, which depends on your bid and ad quality. Search lost impression share (budget) is the share missed because the budget ran out.

Can PaidSync change my Google Ads account without asking?

In the PaidSync workspace, by default, every write is approval-gated: it is held as a card before it runs, and an applied card gets a one-tap undo. On every path, Google Ads creates and most other creates are previewed with dry_run, destructive operations need confirm_destructive, and applied changes are logged, on a best-effort basis, with a 7-day before-and-after outcome. When your own assistant calls PaidSync over MCP, no card is written, so whether a person confirms first is set in your assistant.
